Self-Reflection

When I started the semester, I struggled in being able to construct my essay, brainstorm topics, and include online reacher to make sense.  I have been able to improve on my shortcomings through what I have learned throughout this semester. I had learned to focus on what the audience is looking for, keeping in mind the purpose of the task, and synthesizing information in my writing making it coherent for the readers based on research gathered online. This can be seen through the assessment that I have been able to complete through this semester. These assessments include; a resume and cover letter, lab report, group proposal, and technical description.

The resume and cover letter, helped me grow as a writer by understanding how important, what the audience is looking for is. The task required me to build a resume and cover letter based on the skills I had acquired and find a job related to my major. I used Linkin’ and Indeed to search for jobs related to mechanical engineering.  What came next was knowing who the audience was, which was the hiring managers. Based on the information that was given on the job descriptions became criteria to satisfy the audience. Based on the job description and the skills I acquired, I synthesized both information and started building my resume.

The lab report task requires me to do research based on probability with a pair of dice. This assessment helped me understand the importance of structure and information. For this assessment information literacy is a key component when writing for this assessment. CCNY library database has so much information, so keywords for this assessment were important to find. Based on the information that was used from a peer-reviewed article and the data I gathered for this report, I had to synthesize both information that supported my claim for this task. The sources that I used for my detail I had to write in APA style based on; Last name, First name initial, date of publication, title, and Doi.

The group proposal project, the purpose of this project was the creation of a student center in CCNY. The audience for this would be higher executives in CCNY. For this task, I collaborated with three of my classmates. Through our discussion, I realized the importance of communication that’s needed for this project. Based on our discussion we built a Google survey to get student input on what the majority wanted in the student center. What came next was researching our parts for the project and citing the information that we had used in APA style.

The purpose of the technical description is to talk about a topic that relates to our major, and additionally an impact on the future. The topic that was chosen for this project was a new power source for cars other than fossil fuel, more specifically nuclear energy. The reasoning behind this idea was more targeted toward the audience based on how nuclear energy is perceived as dangerous, and fascinating. Through creating the project we had to use the library database to gather credible information and interesting for the audience. The collected data was synthesized, allowing the audience to understand the topic.

In conclusion, Compared to how I felt from the beginning of the semester to now, I am more confident in my writing skills. I have been able to learn and improve my writing skills by using the knowledge I have gained from the course and applying it to my essay. The key factors that helped me improve were knowing my audience, the purpose of the task, and synthesizing information into my own words. I still have other hurdles that I need to overcome like grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary to further improve my writing skills but I do feel more confident in being able to construct my essay and organize my thoughts. The knowledge I have gained throughout this semester I use it and further improve my writing skills and broaden my knowledge for my ongoing academic classes.
